How Often Should You Wash Your Face?

An age old question, often lost amongst different advice when it comes to skincare, knowing your type and condition is the first and most necessary step in answering this question, as knowledge is power. Allow us to provide you with some clarity.

The classic answer to this question is twice a day. Once in the morning to get rid of any dead skin cells after your skin has regenerated overnight, and once in the evening to get rid of daily impurities. Any more than this will dry and irritate the skin. This is the ideal for anyone with normal skin, simply to remove makeup and impurities from environmental pollution.

However, the reality is more complicated as it entirely depends on the skin of an individual. If you have anything other than normal skin, you should adapt your routine accordingly.

Oily Skin:

If you suffer from oily skin, you should be washing your face twice a day. If oil is left within your pores, it can clog them and cause those unwanted breakouts.

Try the Balancing Foam cleanser to soothe and balance the skin’s pH, whilst natural foaming agents remove all traces of stubborn makeup.

Dry or Sensitive Skin:

If your skin is on the dry side, you will need to wash your face less as it can strip your skin of lubricating sebum.

Try the ESPA Hydrating Cleansing Milk for a gentle cleanse that will deeply nourish the skin without irritation.

Lifestyle Factors:

If you exercise often, you will not want sweat to clog your pores so should always wash or cleanse your face afterwards. Clogged pores and a build-up of sweat can cause unnecessary breakouts.

For a quick but deep cleanse, we recommend the ESPA Invigorating Face Wash. A refreshing, foaming cleanser that deeply purifies and leaves skin soft. Quick to use, simply apply directly onto damp skin or a damp cotton pad, work in, then rinse. Natural foaming agents work to remove even the deepest impurities.

How To:

Washing your face refers to a thorough cleanse, rather than the old-fashioned soap and water, which can be too harsh and strip your skin. Water alone also does not remove all traces of makeup or environmental pollution that could end up deep in your pores. Try one of our ESPA cleansers, formulated for individual skin types and all designed to provide a deep cleanse and added nourishment.

Make sure to apply to face, neck and décolleté, to ensure you remove all impurities. Rinse your face with warm water or a muslin cloth, before and after cleansing to soften pores and make your ritual more enjoyable and relaxing.
