Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa – History

Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa dates back to 1718 when a small farmstead was developed into a hostelry, becoming a popular coaching inn with the opening of the Kendal to Keswick turnpike road in 1762. William Wordsworth, the famous bard, described the Inn as ‘a pleasant halting-place’. The site is now a thriving resort hotel with luxurious accommodation, Health Club, Spa, Watersports Centre and conference facilities. The Spa at Low Wood Bay is built on the former site of the stables and old dairy of the original coaching inn.
They were able to retain some of the original features such as the hay racks and rough stone walling. Together with the marina, which can be seen from The Spa, we formed a vocabulary of shapes based on boat hulls for the seating area in Reception and also in the treatment room shelving.
Materials such as reclaimed timber were utilised sourced from old barns. This was used it for cladding, furniture and shelving. Large format tiles were added, which give the appearance of rusting metal panels. Areas have been subdivided with twig screens using locally felled silver birch trees. This help to zone areas but maintain the stunning lake and mountain views through.
